The House of Lords published its report Off-site manufacture for construction: Building for change on 19 July 2018 and we are pleased to have been recognised as one of its selected contributors.
We now seek to offer our partnership to those who want and need to take fast action in the light of the report.
As well as submitting a written report during the consultation process, we met with various housing-related senior members of both the Houses of Lords and Commons, and with key civil servants within the relevant departments. During these meetings we have answered intensive questions on how our Affordable Housing Strategy works, explained in detail how it will make significant inroads into the chronic shortage of housing in the UK, currently requiring 300,000 additional homes per annum, and made specific recommendations on the changes required in the UK construction industry to bring about the changes required.
We will build a minimum of 10,000 homes per year; the maximum is limited only by land availability. These are blind-tenure affordable homes for private sale or rental (i.e. available to those not on social housing lists) as well as making them available to housing associations where needed.
We are doing many things differently. For example, the correct finding in Off-site manufacture for construction: Building for change that the housing market is fragmented, is already belied by our 70 plus-strong supply-chain which has developed a unique approach to putting housing needs first, profit second. It is a tight team, made up of some very large players; partners committed to the vision of providing homes for those thousands of families living in unacceptable conditions even as you read this.
We are ready and willing to partner with traditional construction firms who want to get into offsite construction quickly, as a result of this report.
